Ubuntu releases have a development codename and the version number indicates the year and month of delivery (e.g. 23.10 Mantic Minotaur was released in October 2023).
Most Ubuntu installations are Long Term Service (LTS) and these are published every two years in April.
LTS versions provide security updates for 5 years without a subscription and a further 5 years if you subscribe to Ubuntu Pro.
