Apple provide support for three years for each version of the operating system, after which the version will no longer receive security updates.
Sonoma, Ventura, and Monterey currently receive security updates
Big Sur is no longer supported and no longer receives security updates.
By default, MacOS downloads and installs updates automatically. Check that automatic updates are enabled.
How to check your version :
Click on Apple logo, then click 'About This Mac'. The version name and number will appear.
