Apple regularly release updates for iOS and versions 16 and 17 have been recently updated.
The latest version of iOS and iPadOS is 17.2.1, released 19th December 2023.
Most updates and security patches happen automatically by default. Apple provide regular information about updates via the Apple Support pages (link below).
How to check your version :
Press the Menu button multiple times until the main menu appears.
Select Settings > About.
The software version of your device should appear on this screen.
