Windows Server

Windows server editions typically have a ten year lifecycle. The first five years is mainstream support, the second five years are extended support. A server operating system is compliant if it is in either mainstream or extended support. Beyond this it’s necessary to purchase Extended Security Update (ESU) support.

From Microsoft:

The Extended Security Update (ESU) program is a last resort option for customers who need to run certain legacy Microsoft products past the end of support. It includes Critical* and/or Important* security updates for a maximum of three years after the product's End of Extended Support date.

Extended Security Updates will be distributed if and when available. ESUs do not include new features, customer-requested non-security updates, or design change requests.”

Extended security update program

Extended security updates (ESU) are supplied by Microsoft at their discretion and you should check with Microsoft if they are available and under what terms. Please note this should be considered a last resort and the preferred option should be to upgrade to a version in mainstream or extended support.
